The rust project began in 2014 on a casual road trip through Arizona’s Route 66. I stopped to examine rusted signage, machinery, automobiles, and all manner of once-treasured objects, now discarded and left to rot. To me they were compelling examples of wabi-sabi, which holds that there is esthetic value in all states of being, including decay. So the artist coaxes beauty from ugliness. I return often, always finding new photographs as the rust decays still further.
