Art & Oppression: Artist's Statement

Patricia Galagan

Cuba

In five visits to Cuba between 2010 and 2017 I observed and photographed enough sad resignation to form the opinion that this might be what comes from living in an oppressed country. The more subjects who presented their weary patience to the camera, the more I became convinced that this might be the natural mien of people who have waited a long time for things to improve with little evidence that they will. No Cuban ever told me the country was oppressive or unfree, but this small archive of defeated spirits suggests otherwise.
