Art & Oppression: Artist's Statement

Ellen Jantzen

losing reality; reality of loss

The definition of oppression that most resonates with me is “mental pressure or distress”. While my mother-in-law was succumbing to the ravages of Alzheimer’s, I photographed my husband (her son) as he tried dealing with his distress. Some of these photos were taken in her house after we moved her to a nursing home. My husband specifically designed this home for his mother, so as he was losing her, he was also losing one of his creations.
